Silja Kallsen
Corporate Relations Developer – FöretagsrelationerMy journey into animal advocacy began in childhood. I spent nearly every vacation and many weekends at my uncle’s dairy farm—a place that felt like a second home. My sister, cousin, and I kept a notebook where we tracked the new calves and divided up who would care for whom—brushing them, walking them, spending time with them, and of course, giving them names. Usually, only the female calves were named, since they would stay on the farm. The males, seen as a byproduct of the dairy system, were often sent away early—without names, only numbers. I didn’t understand that then. One of the calves I looked after was Patchwork. When I learned he was going to be taken away, I promised him that I wouldn’t eat “them” anymore—though I didn’t yet know that a concept like “vegetarianism” even existed. That small decision set something in motion. Later, I came to understand that avoiding meat wasn’t the whole picture—that dairy, too, was part of the same system.
That early decision stayed with me. Over time, I came to understand the deeper systems of exploitation that animals face—whether they are raised for meat, eggs, dairy, leather, or any other product. My long-term commitment has been, and continues to be, to challenge these systems and to advocate for a world where animals are no longer harmed for human purposes.
At the Albert Schweitzer Foundation, I spent over a decade improving the lives of farmed animals—building and leading international teams, and securing meaningful changes for chickens, ducks, geese, fish, and lobsters through strategic corporate engagement.
Now, at Djurens Rätt, I use that experience to support change both within Scandinavia and beyond. I work to strengthen corporate engagement, contribute to our international strategy, and help identify effective ways we can create impact for animals in other countries. I love being part of an organization that not only shares my values but also works strategically to turn them into tangible change.
In my free time, you’ll most likely find me near the ocean or wandering among trees—always with my rescue dogs by my side. That’s where I feel most at home.
